Mobile hotspot device

A dedicated mobile hotspot device — a Verizon Jetpack, Netgear Nighthawk MiFi, Skyroam Solis — pulls cellular data and shares it as Wi-Fi to laptops/tablets. Different from phone tethering: dedicated radio, dedicated battery, often its own data plan.

A mobile hotspot device is a small dedicated piece of hardware (Jetpack, MiFi, Skyroam, Netgear Nighthawk M6, Solis Lite) that does one job: pull cellular data and share it as Wi-Fi to your other devices. It's different from using your phone's tethering feature in three ways:

  • Dedicated radio. Doesn't share cellular antennas with phone calls or app data. Cellular performance is more consistent.
  • Dedicated battery. The device runs 8-12 hours on its own battery, instead of draining your phone.
  • Dedicated data plan. The hotspot device has its own SIM and its own data plan (or data add-on to your existing line). The plan is usually priced for sustained heavy data use, unlike phone hotspot allotments which are typically capped at 5-50 GB.

When a dedicated hotspot beats phone tethering

  • Sustained remote work. 5+ days/week, 8 hours/day of laptop tethering will exceed most phones' hotspot allotments. A dedicated device on a $50/month 100 GB plan handles it.
  • RV / overland travel. Multiple devices (laptop, tablet, smart TV, kid's iPad) sharing one connection benefit from the dedicated hotspot's router-grade firmware.
  • Backup home internet. Some users keep a hotspot device as a failover for cable internet outages. Plug in only when needed.
  • Conferences and events. Reliable internet at trade shows and conferences where venue Wi-Fi is overloaded.

Plans for hotspot devices

  • Carrier postpaid hotspot plans: Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T sell 50-200 GB hotspot-device plans for $50-100/month.
  • Hotspot MVNO plans: Solis, Skyroam, Visible+ (used as hotspot via tethering), US Mobile Warp Plus all offer competitive multi-device plans.
  • Pay-per-day: Skyroam Solis offers "$9/day for unlimited" billing where you pay only for days you use the device. Useful for occasional travel.

Devices to know

  • Netgear Nighthawk M6 / M6 Pro: the gold-standard 5G hotspot. ~$700 unlocked, supports any carrier.
  • Verizon Jetpack 8800L (4G): older but still common in carrier-issued kits.
  • T-Mobile 5G Hotspot: carrier-issued, locked to T-Mobile plan.
  • Skyroam Solis Lite: global travel-optimized; pay-per-day billing.
